Fans of Jodi Picoult are in for a treat next month when the award winning author visits Birmingham Central Library to talk about her latest blockbuster Handle With Care.

The American writer has been a huge favourite with UK audiences since her debut novel Songs of the Humpback Whale was published to great acclaim in 1992.

Picoult will give a talk at Birmingham Central Library on Saturday May 2 (5.30pm for a 6pm start) as part of a worldwide tour to promote her 16th novel, Handle With Care.

Cllr Ray Hassall, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: "Once again we're delighted to welcome a world renowned author to the Central Library.

"Recent events with Rick Wakeman and Tess Gerritsen have proved hugely popular and we're expecting another bumper crowd for Jodi Picoult."

Picoult has sold over 3 million books in the UK alone and recently clocked up her sixth consecutive paperback number one with Change of Heart.

Free tickets for the event are available from the Box Office on 0121 303 2323 or on www.birminghamboxoffice.com

Short Story Writing Competition

Rate: U

Dear All,

I thought I'd find some competition to put on this site, after my recent success in getting published on another site, rather than our own. There are obviously a lot out there, and here is one I am listing below:

The firstwriter.com Fifth International Short Story Contest is accepting short stories from around the world. A first prize of £200 is on offer, as well as the possibility of publication in firstwriter.magazine for runners up. Click here for more details.

There are loads of other competitions on this site, some free, some you have to pay for. Yvonne, I know you are experienced in entering, so good luck for anyone who wants to have a go.

Writing Competition Entry Published

After Yvonne putting up the news of writing competition on China a few months ago, I 'rehashed' part of my story from An Unforgetable Trip and submitted The Day the Earth Shook., to an OZ-based website. The outcome has just been announced. Although not the winning entry, mine was published under the Highly Recommended. Please check it out. http://kaixin.com.au/highly-commended-kaixin-writ/

I must say that this is very encouraging and give me impetus for future attempt to enter competitions, like Yvonne. Way to go, everyone!

Tools - is there a way to have a space for feedback/comments?

Hi Annahita

I was thinking that maybe you could add a column for readers to give feedback on certain piece of writing. Obviously I am thinking in a longer term - so far the site is being used only by members, in fact, only three os us make regular use of it, but in the future, it may attract more contributions, and I think one feature should be allow readers to make comments - this way, the writers know how well or badly they did and able to edit if they so wish. None of us write perfectly, and there is always room for improvements. What do you think?

Giving constructive feedback is valuable, I believe. We used to do that regularly when we first started the group, and I thought it was very useful. Anyway, I'll leave the nitty-gritty in your capable hands.

How to attach pictures to our writing on-line?

Hi Annahita,

I tried to update my article Journey to Kirkland just now, and it seems that although the descriptions are fine but pictures ddo not upload as I have expected. It seems that the website only allows pictures already on-line, is that right? I have attached several photos of mine to my writing and none of them appears in the end.

Is there a way of attaching our own pictures without having to publish them on other websites beforehand? Please let me know.

I very much enjoyed your contribution and Yvonne's piece on Autumn. Very vivid depictions.
